Unilever has announced a tie-up with the European Vegetarian Union, which will see about 500 of the fmcg giant’s products bearing the non-profit organisation’s insignia by the end of 2017.
In the UK, brands including Hellmann’s, Flora and Knorr will feature the EVU’s ‘V’ on pack as being suitable for vegetarians. It would support Unilever’s ongoing commitment to improve the health and wellbeing of its consumers and the nutritional quality of its products, and offer shoppers a trusted, European-wide vegetarian standard, said the company’s VP for foods, Andre Burger.
“We want to make it easier for our vegetarian and flexitarian consumers to identify which of our products meet their dietary needs and to encourage more informed and healthier eating choices,” he added.
The partnership with Unilever was “a landmark moment” for the EVU, according to the organisation’s director Floris de Graad. “It is the first time we have been able to partner with a company that intends to bring so many of its products under the V label scheme. It is also great news for anyone wanting to reduce the amount of meat in their diet.”
